Assault accused charged with bribing Wentworth policeman

The arrested man told the detective to 'make a plan'

AN assault suspect tried to get off easy by bribing a Wentworth detective but was quickly cut short and arrested.

The detective was taking the 32-year-old man’s fingerprints for charges of common assault and malicious damage to property when he verbalised his wish that the case would be resolved. The detective asked him how can he resolve the matter, since only the court has the power to do so.

Trying his luck, the man said he would pay the detective to let the charges slide. “The detective told him what he suggested was a crime and he would be charged for it,” said Wentworth SAPS spokesman, Cpt Mbuso Gumede.

This did not deter the determined man, as he continued to push his plan forward, insisting the detective ‘make a plan’. The man then called his father-in-law to organise for money to be brought to the station. An amount of R500 was brought and handed to the suspect, who then gave it to the detective.

Playing along, the detective took the money but quickly turned the tables on him and charged him with bribery on top of his existing charges. He was arrested and appeared in court on Monday, 23 January. He was released on bail and will appear again on 14 February
