Dance auditions call as project makes a decade

The project will celebrate 10 years of its existence this year.

DANCE Movement will host an open audition and registration for youth (aged between 5-20) in the community to join the dance programme this Saturday, 21 January.

Auditions will be held at the Transhaven Centre, at 51 Treasure Beach Road.

Administered under the non-profit organisation, the Wentworth Arts and Culture Organisation, the project will celebrate 10 years of its existence this year.

During the past decade, the Dance Movement project has trained youth in hip hop, break dancing, contemporary, jazz and many other styles of dancing and has also represented the country internationally at prestigious dance events in Scotland, England and USA. Locally they have performed at several KZN dance festivals and productions, won numerous dance competitions and last year scooped two awards at the Durban Dance Youth awards for their exceptional skills of best junior hip hop group and emerging professional contemporary group.

“The past 10 years have definitely being a mixed emotions of excitement and hard work but I am proud of how far the project has come and the platforms, exposure and opportunities it has given the youth in the community to express themselves creatively,” said dance director, Jarryd Watson.

Dance Movement has given many youth and other dancers an opportunity to venture into the arts and culture industry, creating viable career paths and also contributed to youth development, social and community development.

Martinique Palmer who is currently in matric, is an example of the youth who have excelled exceptionally with Dance Movement. She has been dancing for 10 years and has notched up several accolades. Among her many dance awards are the most diligent, first runner-up, best female award and last year she won the Dance Movement dancer award (most outstanding) and the all time achievement award for this latter award, she received a bursary to study towards an arts related degree in 2013. She also traveled with the troupe to the Broadway Dance Centre in New York, USA.

“I’m just so honoured and grateful to be part of such an amazing dance studio that has made me realise my potential and reach all my goals. I’m so thankful to Jarryd for all his hard work and the support that he gives us to make it possible to pursue our careers in the arts and for the good mentor he is to me,” said Martinique.
