Choreographer scoops ubuntu award for dance

HIP hop and contemporary choreographer, Jarryd Watson of Wentworth was awarded the 'Ubuntu award for dance' at the annual KZN Dancelink Awards in Durban on 27 July, for his work with Dance Movement.

The awards recognise the work and performance of KZN’s top dancers, choreographers and people who have contributed to growth and sustainability in the industry.

“The fact that I was nominated for this award with nominees who are well-respected choreographers in Durban, was an honour in itself. When my name was called as the winner, I couldn’t believe it, it was mixed emotions of shock and excitement,” said Jarryd.

He started his work with Dance Movement in 2007 and over the past six years, has staged several productions. In 2010 he took Dance Movement to the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland and in 2011, a team of his dancers attended the United Dance Organisation world championships street dance competition in England, where they scooped 12 trophies.

Following on his success, he was awarded the inaugural Eric Shabalala dance champion award and the Sapref community sustainability and development award in 2012.

Dancer, Leagan Peffer of Treasure Beach took home the ‘breakthrough/newcomer award’ at the function.

Leagan works alongside Jarryd at Dance Movement to train and develop youth skills. They are now working to raise funds for 13 dancers who have been invited to the New York Broadway Dance Centre in September. “They will have the opportunity to work with the world’s best choreographers, including those from the hit US reality show ‘So you think you can dance’ and the movie ‘Step Up’.

The group has to raise R350,000 to cover costs for the overseas trip. The community and business owners are urged to support them. If able to assist, call 082-683-9665.
