IN a bid to promote business security, Brighton Beach SAPS and Security Force distributed brochures to local companies.

Business on the Bluff and in Clairwood and Jacobs were visited and information was given on ways to minimise business robberies, breakings and stock theft during the festive season.

“The project forms part of the SAPS’ national strategy to combat crime during the festive season 2016/2017.

Although many business are conversant with safety guidelines, new owners, supervisors, manager and employees were afforded one-on-one discussions on the business safety guide provided during the project,” said Brighton Beach SAPS media officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

Some 188 business were part of the camping, with 554 brochures handed out.

People are urged to join the police WhatsApp crime alert group that allows or people to report business related crimes and receiving information on crime trends and business-related information.

Some of the guidelines provided in the brochure are:

  • Don’t resist. Do exactly as you are told. The robbers are in control of the situation because they are armed and it serves no purpose to resist their instructions – you will only be putting lives at risk.
  • Relax. Regulate your breathing, taking long, slow deliberate breaths. This slows your heart rate and helps you relax.
  • Speak slowly. Don’t shout or raise your voice to the robbers. They are probably more nervous than you and it won’t take much for them to lose any self-control they may possess.
  • Don’t make any sudden movements. When you want to do something – even if it is an instruction from the robber – tell him what you are doing – “I am going to take the keys out of my pocket now” and then do it slowly.
  • Don’t set off the alarm. Activate the alarm only if you can do so in secret and it is a silent alarm. Many armed robberies have turned violent (with hostages taken) because of the siren being activated, as the noise it makes causes the robbers to panic. Also, only set off the silent alarm if you can do so without the robbers seeing you.

Brighton Beach SAPS management thanks Security Force for their partnership.
