R1,2-m in fake R100 notes seized

Two men aged 18 and 24 arrested as police swoop on house

Two men aged 18 and 24 years will appear in the Umlazi Magistrates Court today, 10 October, to face charges of fraud and possession of counterfeit notes to the value of R1,2-million.

COUNTERFEIT 1

The men were arrested on Saturday, 8 October by K9 Unit members from Umlazi area when they followed up information about fake notes at U section, Umlazi. The members pounced and searched the house. With the help of currency detection dog, Erica, the members recovered R1,2-million from the home and from a vehicle parked at the premises. All the notes were R100 counterfeit notes with the same serial numbers. Two men found in the house were arrested and will be charged with fraud and possession of counterfeit notes.

KZN acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa  commended the member of K9 unit for acting swiftly on information received and the men’s arrest. ‘I also thank members of the community for supplying the police with positive information about suspects allegedly in possession of these fake notes,’ he said.
