Animal rescue NGO seeks help

Vaccinate your animals and report cruelty and neglect when you see it happen. Be a voice for the voiceless," said Reynen.

DOG rescue NGO, Emergency Kennel is up to their neck in vet bills following a series of rescues of abandoned and stray dogs.

Volunteer at the Woodlands based animal welfare NGo and animal lover, Juanita Reynen appeals to the community and local businesses to help them or even volunteer their time to tend to the needs of the dogs. “Our bill sits at R8,672. We do this work voluntarily and we get no funding from the state, we pay for everything from our own pockets and cannot continue without the support of the community,” she said.

The dogs that are rescued daily have lived a life of abandonment and no love. Tales of pups being left half dead in the gutter or surviving on garbage scraps

The dogs that are rescued daily have lived a life of abandonment and no love. Tales of pups being left half dead in the gutter or surviving on garbage scraps breaks the heart of the volunteer, who dedicates her days to giving them a second chance at a good life. “It’s unbelievable how heartless humans can be. Recently we found a box of puppies. The other day a woman brought her two pups in as she couldn’t feed them but they were infected with parvo, a highly contagious virus which spread to the other dogs. This virus is deadly if not treated. They had to be hospitalised, put on drips and force fed. Luckily all survived due to the excellent care at Montclair Animal Hospital. They gave me a huge discount because its rescued pups but the bill is still too high,” she added. Because of this, the kennel cannot have pups in the home since the parvo virus remains active for six months.

All we ask is for support from our community and to urge animal lovers to sterilise their pets. Vaccinate your animals and report cruelty and neglect when you see it happen. Be a voice for the voiceless,” said Reynen.
