[WATCH] Protestors reclaim Wentworth #enoughisenough

"We declare that God is God in this community. Wentworth belongs to Jesus, it does not belong to any drug dealer,"

‘ENOUGH is enough’ were the cries of the community of Wentworth as they took to the streets on Sunday, 26 June to protest against violence, police corruption and drugs.

Pastors and community leaders were joined by hundreds of people who were fed up with living in fear. The protest which started at the Wentworth police station moved on to different hotspots notorious for drug dealing and shootings. Prayers and gospel music blasted from the sound system, giving the protestors encouragement to forge on in the heat. A song that rang in everyone’s hearts, ‘There’s a power in the name of Jesus’ brought out emotions of those affected by the ills of Wentworth. With arms stretched out and embracing each other, a sense of love and a need for change thickened the air as the day progressed.

Wentworth belongs to Jesus, it does not belong to any drug dealer

The protest, led by the pastors of local churches was planned after a barrage of weekend shootings and alleged gang turf wars that rocked Wentworth. An angry resident who has been living in Wentworth for many years said, “Our children cannot live in fear, they cannot have this violence as part of their lifestyle. It is not destined for them to turn to drugs and alcohol. So we believe with this march, everything that we prayed and marched for today will be accomplished.”

Pastor Dennis Labistour, who preached during the march said, the people of Wentworth are righteous. “We declare that God is God in this community. Wentworth belongs to Jesus, it does not belong to any drug dealer,” said Labistour.

A memorandum handed to Brighton Beach police station commander, Colonel Carel Grobler will be handed it to the provincial office. He was in full support of the protest as he wishes the people well and commends themy for taking a stand against drugs. He urged everyone to take the problem seriously.
