Youth artisan skills set to be sharpened

Municipality to upskill locals.

UPWARDS of R700-million will be spent by eThekwini Municipality to develop youth artisan skills for applicants over the next three years.

The municipal artisan development programme will develop the skills of 10,000 people over three years at an estimated cost of R742.1-million which includes tuition fees, monthly stipends and material and project management.

Unemployed people with an interest in pursuing a career in airconditioning/refrigeration, boilermaking, carpentry, diesel mechanics, electrical, fitting and turning, millrights, motor mechanics, plumbing or wielding, who is 35 or younger and lives in the eThekwini area may apply.

In line with the municipality’s employment equity strategy, 60% of those chosen for the programme will be women.

“Candidates will be required to complete an apprenticeship programme as per the specified and regulated criteria of the applicable SETA and the National Artisan Moderating Body,” said city manager, Sibusiso Sithole.

Applications forms are available at Sizakala centres and at 221 Anton Lembede Street, Shell House Building and completed applications must be hand delivered to same address.

The closing date for applications is Friday, 10 June.
