Tyre thieves hit Montclair

Tyre theft is becoming a growing problem in the area.

FOR the past few weeks, the Montclair SAPS policing area has been hit by tyre crooks who strike in the dead of night.

Communication officer, Lt Derek Vijiam warns residents that while the crimes are mainly taking place in the Yellowwood Park vicinity incidents are sporadic in other areas. Lt Vijiam said tyres are a valuable commodity, especially 4X4 tyres which can cost roughly, R3,000 each. “Residents need to be careful where they park. You have to make it difficult for them. For example, park in a way where it’s hard for them to access your car or where you can hear anyone tamperin with your car,” said Lt Vijiam.

Christine Ackerman from Yellowwood Park, fell victim to the tyre thieves who took all four tyres off her vehicle. She said it’s disgusting how criminals have taken over the area. “There is a gaping hole in the fence of the railway and police are aware that these criminals use this as an access and exit point. I want to know why no-one is fixing it as this will definitely help deter the crime problem?” said Ackerman. The incident has left her and her mother shaken as everything happened while they were asleep. “We did not hear a thing, it really ticks me off that this happened, especially since not one policeman has come to take fingerprints.”

Cases of theft from motor vehicle have been opened and investigations are underway.
