Verge wetters’ thoughtless water waste

Most of us are trying to reduce our water consumption by no longer filling our pools or watering our lawns, and maybe even giving up on our veggie patches.

EDITOR – We are on the brink of a drought, right?

There really are people on our doorstep who are going without water for around four to five hours a day, right?

So then I am sure my anger at driving past a residence in Marine Drive, in the vicinity of the Catholic school at around 8pm at night and seeing their sprinklers on will be understood.

But why was I so annoyed? Were they not watering their vegetable garden, or perhaps their prized roses? Nope. Not even their lawn – well it wasn’t their lawn I was looking at, although they might very well have been watering that too.

Most of us are trying to reduce our water consumption by no longer filling our pools or watering our lawns, and maybe even giving up on our veggie patches. The rest of us are probably taking much shorter showers, or sharing baths and collecting bath water in buckets for flushing loos, these people were watering the verge. The verge I tell you.

It isn’t even their land for pity sake. It belongs to the municipality – the very people who will be switching off our water supply soon if there isn’t a change of mindset.

Why did I not go point out their errant behaviour? Because the conversation would probably have ended with two idiots arguing. You know what they say – “never argue with an idiot, he will bring you down to his level and then beat you with experience”.

Hopefully the ‘verge wetters’ will know who they are, and after reading this letter will choose to be more mindful of the situation we find ourselves in, and more considerate towards the rest of us who would also like ‘our share’ of uninterrupted water supply for as long as possible. Maybe this letter will even serve to make the rest of us more attentive to our water consumption at this time.

Really people – the verge?
