SDCEA plans to counter racecourse freight park plan

SDCEA's objective is to stop this development and provide an alternative use of the land such as housing, entertainment and sports.

THE South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) discuss meeting the Clairwood Racecourse development at a meeting on Thursday, 11 June.

The meeting is to discuss a plan of action for those affected by the development.

In a statement by SDCEA co-ordinator, Desmond D’Sa, he outlines why the public should attend.
Capital Projects bought the Clairwood Racecourse in 2013 from Gold Circle, who previously used the land for horse racing and entertainment.

Capital Projects then applied for the land to be rezoned industrial and to develop the land as a logistic park for warehousing and trucking. “This development is of grave concern as it has been envisaged that 2,000 heavy duty trucks, carrying hazardous and other type of goods stored in containers, will pass on the M4 freeways through our community roads. Hundreds of pupils and residents who use this busy intersection at Basil February (Duranta Road) and the M4 will be affected by this development as a bottle neck will be created by backlogs of trucks trying to enter the logistic park at the racecourse. We urge all who are and will be affected by these developments to attend this meeting to plan a programme of action. This sort of development creates noise, pollution and, among other things, a drop in property values.”

SDCEA’s objective is to stop this development and provide an alternative use of the land such as housing, entertainment and sports. “It is important that affected communities come together and stand up against the current developments as the impact is damaging.” The meeting will be held at St Mary’s Primary School, Merebank at 6pm.
