Deputy principal downs her chalk after 44 years

“It’s going to feel very strange not coming to school, I’ve been doing this all my life. When I go to Checkers my car will go into auto mode and take me to school.”

VAN Riebeeck Park Primary School’s deputy principal is retiring after 44 years of teaching.

Bernise Wilson started her teaching career at Van Riebeeck Park Primary School (VRPPS) in 1971 after completing her tertiary education at Durban Teachers Training College.
She then taught at Bushlands Primary for five She returned to VRPPS as senior primary head of department in 1985 and then became deputy principal.

The 65-year-old says being a teacher was her calling. “I’ve been able to help children, care for them and show them right from wrong, lead them on the right path and help them become better people,” said Wilson.
School principal Prabha Padayachee said she will be remembered for her dedication. “Mrs Wilson is a wonderful people’s person who has endeared herself to learners, parents and teachers alike. She’s a very patient person,” he said.

Fellow colleague, Sonja Weber says Wilson’s laughter will be missed. “We’re going to feel quite lost without her. Another teacher, Loretta Heathcote says she and Wilson are always the first to arrive at school in the morning. “Every morning Mrs Wilson sings the Click Song. She’s so special too because she’s fluent in Zulu,” said Heathcote.
Reflecting on her time at VRPPS Wilson said: “I’ve worked with such wonderful people. I’m grateful for being given the opportunity to work with everyone. Thank you to the school for their love, support and care.”

The much-loved teacher is taking a three months sabbatical when she starts her retirement and then she’ll plan ahead. “It’s going to feel very strange not coming to school, I’ve been doing this all my life. When I go to Checkers my car will go into auto mode and take me to school.”
