Police warn of bail money scam

DO not fall prey to scammers claiming to offer simple ways to pay bail money for friends or family, warns Brighton Beach SAPS.

According to communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, a new scam is doing the rounds in the area. “Individuals posing as a lawyer, advocate or police officer call the family of a person who has been detained, arrested or who is to appear in court, saying that the bail or admission of guilt may be made via a money gram deposit.

Once the deposit is made and the family arrives at the court or police station to collect the accused upon his or her release, they realise they have been scammed,” she said.

She added that bail is only payable in cash at the court or the police station that is granting bail and admission of guilt is payable in cash at any Metro Police office or police station.

“Should any member of the public receive such a telephonic request they are urged to immediately contact their nearest police station to make a report, and do not make any payments.”

SMS the police hotline on 32211 or email www.crimeline.co.za to make a report or offer tips on these scammers.
