UPDATE: Crash taxi driver charged with drunk driving

THE driver whose taxi ferrying school children overturned on Kenyon Howden Road yesterday, Monday 10 November has been charged with drunk driving.

“When we arrived on the scene, we suspected the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was breathalised by police,” said communications officer, Lt Leopold Jojozi.
The man’s breathalyzer reading at the scene measured 2.6mgs/1000ml. He was taken to a district surgeon and was found to have alcohol in his system.

The 33-year-old man was arrested and charged with drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving. He appeared in Wentworth Court this morning Tuesday, 11 November. Police await the man’s blood analysis report.
“People must make sure that drivers transporting their children are registered with the Department of Transport,” said Jojozi.

Requirements are:

An annually renewed scholar permit which is granted by the KZN Department of Transport. Their board approval may only be granted when the following criteria are met A public drivers permit must be obtained.
A valid South African Drivers’ license must be held (foreign driver licences are not acceptable).
Valid insurance and third party insurance.
Passenger Liability Insurance for about R150,000
A valid SARS tax number.
Permission for the required route from the town planning department.
A registered road worthy and correctly licensed vehicle.
