Puppet show rewards eco-school competition winners

Eco warriors rewarded with puppet show.

JUNAGARTH Road Primary School took top honours in the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa) eco-schools programme seven steps competition and pupils were rewarded with an educational puppet show.

The Wessa eco-schools programme, sponsored by Engen, is one branch of an international programme that focuses on environmental learning and sustainability projects. There are currently five schools involved in the programme in South Durban – Nizam Road Primary School, Fairvale Secondary School, Collingwood Primary School, Austerville Primary School and Junagarth Road Primary School.

The Engen cluster eco-schools competed in a Wessa seven step competition, with Junagarth Road Primary School claiming victory and being rewarded with an educational and interactive puppet show by Yo Puppet Co during Arbor Week.

“The show emphasised the message of environmental awareness and green living in a very fun way. Pupils are showing more care for the environment at school since watching the show,” said Junagarth Road Primary eco-committee chairman, Cheryl Govender.

Any school can join the Wessa eco-schools programme. For information on joining or on the puppet company, email coastalkznecoschools@wessa.co.za. Follow @WESSAEcoSchools on Twitter or like WESSA Eco-Schools, South Africa on Facebook to keep up-to-date with the schools programme or ‘green’ ideas.
