Wentworth seniors grab gold

Local senior citizens bring home glory with gold from KZN games.

WENTWORTH residents made their suburb proud as they brought home gold in the fifth annual KZN Golden Games.

The games, which were held in Ugu municipality from Friday to Saturday, 26 to 27 August saw senior citizens from across the province compete in varied activities, including track events and football and some quirky events, like pass the ball, duck walk and jukskei.

The team of 13 from Wentworth were headed by 69-year-old Monica Ishmael and form part of the Happy Hearts Club, under Tafta. “I trained our team, emphasising that we are going for gold,” said Ishmael.

And win gold they did – in pass the ball, the women’s 60 to 69 relay and the men’s 1,800m track race. “We were all so proud and excited about our success at the games. I hope this encourages other senior citizens to get involved in clubs in their areas. Instead of sitting and doing nothing, look for opportunities to enrich your life.”

The Wentworth team haven’t taken their eye off the prize, as they get ready for the national games in Mpumalanga from Tuesday to Friday, 28 to 31 October. “I hope we’ll return home with more gold medals around our necks.”

The Happy Hearts Club meets every Monday at 9am at John Dunn House and Ishmael urges more residents to attend.
