Organisations band together to clean up Treasure Beach

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board, together with other organisations, collected loads of litter during a recent beach clean-up.

AIMED at keeping the ocean clean and protecting marine life, the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board (KZNSB) joined hands with various stakeholders to clean up Treasure Beach on The Bluff recently.

Some of the stakeholders included the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Aquelle, eThekwini Municipality, South Durban Community Environment Alliance, Association of Clean Communities, John Dory’s Zero Waste Initiative and AmaZulu Football Club.

Mthobisi Mbhense, the KZNSB’s acting communications officer, said the initiative is a promise to bring cleanliness and purity to nature as a whole.

Mbhense said the board implemented the beach clean-up with the aim of protecting the marine ecosystem by removing debris that poses a danger to aquatic animals and plants.

“The KZNSB noticed that if you head to any beach in KZN, you will likely see bottles, cigarette butts, plastic pieces and more. The KZNSB strongly believes that the initiative of keeping our local beaches clean helps protect marine habitats and wildlife, while fostering a deeper appreciation for these beautiful natural spaces we all share.”

“Furthermore, water has a cyclical nature, which means that anything we are putting into our oceans and other water bodies will come back to us sooner or later. For every mile of ocean, there are pieces of plastic debris floating. As plastic does not decompose over a long period, and only disintegrates, minute plastic particles are already showing up in our food and water. If these trends continue, it won’t be long before we face disastrous outcomes for our environment – that is also why we took the initiative to participate in this year’s clean-up day. However, it is also not our first beach clean-up and will not be the last. We look forward to working with our partners to keep our beaches clean,” he said.
