The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance took a unique approach in celebrating Arbour Week this year by involving schools in tree-planting activities and education.

IN commemoration of National Arbour Week, the South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) held a tree-planting and educational programme at various schools in Wentworth and Merebank.

The programme, which was headed by Tristan Meek, SCDEA’s youth and media project officer, and Kershni Ramreddi, SDCEA’s transition and energy project officer, was held throughout the week at various primary schools, including Austerville Primary, Durban East Primary, Collingwood Primary, ML Sultan St Mary’s Primary and Nizam Road Primary schools.

Meek said Arbor Week is an annual observance dedicated to celebrating and promoting the importance of trees and forests.

“It is a week-long event in which individuals, communities and organisations come together to raise awareness about the benefits of trees, preserving and caring for trees and the environment, as well as engaging in various tree-related activities, such as tree-planting.

“This year, SDCEA tried something different for a few schools in Wentworth and Merebank. We got the learners involved by allowing them to plant trees in their respective schools, as well as speaking to them about why we celebrate Arbour Week and the importance of trees in a school environment. We would like to thank all the schools that were involved in the programme,” he said.
