Gallery: Karate students benefit from winter workshop

Instructors from various dojos with different styles shared their experiences and knowledge at the workshop.

A FOUR-HOUR winter karate workshop hosted by the Shito-Ryu Karatedo benefited close to 100 karatekas from the south Durban area.

The free workshop taught the finer points of karate and exercises and was attended by students from Merebank, Clairwood, Chatsworth, Lamontville and Botswana.

Visiting instructor, Kyoshi Moses Kgosibodiba, from Botswana, took the students through a rigorous exercise routine and taught them scientific karate exercises, while stressing the importance of correct techniques and stretching during karate.

The students were then taken through their paces by the head of the Itosu-Ryu Karataedo International Federation of South Africa, Shihan Mervyn Reddy. He taught the students katas and the importance of correct stances, and power punching. Students were then taught free sparring, kicks and the other forms of the art by the various instructors.

The participants were then treated to healthy sandwiches and meals which were prepared and sponsored by parents and well-wishers.

Devan Pillay, instructor of the Shito-Ryu Karatedo Institute, said the importance of discipline in karate was paramount and indicated the synergy between education and karate. He felt that students who attended karate classes regularly saw an improvement in their ability to focus and thus an improvement in their studies.

Pillay said that their club believed in developing the child holistically and has hence decided to teach the traditional form of the art while steering the focus away from competitive karate.
