Top learners get opportunity to attend maritime winter school

The programme aims to create maritime awareness, and to help learners improve their grades and performance in their maritime subjects.

TOP performing mathematics, physical sciences and maritime studies Grade 12 learners at Mowat Park High School, were given the opportunity to attend the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) Maritime Winter School Programme in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) from July 3 to 7.

According to SAIMI, the winter school programme is an initiative to support maritime schooling subjects as well as expanding the maritime awareness programme (MAP).

“The winter school programme is one of SAIMI’s initiatives aimed at realising its strategic objectives of increasing the number of South African youth involved in the maritime industry.

“Apart from creating maritime awareness, the programme is also aimed at improving the grades and performance of learners in their maritime subjects, as well as mathematics and physical sciences through a series of lessons and guest lectures on various maritime themes,” they said.

The winter school will also expose learners to various site visits, such as laboratories, workshops, and harbour tours.

“This is to link the theory they learn in class with practice. We also aim to create awareness about the career opportunities in the maritime industry,” they said.

Another learner, Akhona Khanyile, said she will use the opportunity to her full potential.

“I hope to come back with information that will assist me at school, as well as when making my future studies and career decision.”
