Community support brings third whale mural to life

The murals formed part of the Sodurba Community Tourism Organisation's development of the KZN Whale Coast® and it is in perfect time for their sixth annual Welcoming of the Whales Festival™ set to take place on June 24.

AN outpour of support from the community has seen the third mural of a humpback whale calf being completed.

Hoping to uplift The Bluff, the Sodurba Community Tourism Organisation (CTO), embarked on an initiative to have a life-size mural painted of a humpback whale and a calf along a wall at the corner of Marine Drive and Herbert Andrews Road.

The first two murals, which were done by well-known artist and mural painter, Gifford ‘Giffy’ Duminy, were completed in March this year. The organisation had appealed for assistance to have a third calf painted on the open space of the wall.

Helga du Preez, the organisation’s chairperson, said since then they were inundated with offers to assist.

“We were inundated with ‘how can we help’ or ‘what more can we do to help’ messages and calls. We were able to have the third mural completed recently,” she said.

The festival will take place along Foreshore Drive on The Bluff on June 24, from 08:00 to 16:00. The event, which offers free admission to the public, will boast a variety of activities and entertainment for the whole family.

The day consists of a visit to the educational centre, various beach activities, as well as an arts and craft market, and plenty of food stalls. There will be a free park and ride facility from The Bluff showgrounds. Shuttles will be transporting guests down to Foreshore Drive.

There will also be a cocktail evening on June 23, and a tour of The Bluff Whaling Station on June 25. For more information, email market2023@sodurba.co.za or WhatsApp on 071 143 1235.
