Teenagers arrested for attempted murder after shooting boy (14)

The 16-year-old was charged for being in unlawful possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, while the 18-year-old was charged with attempted murder.

TWO teenagers suspected of shooting a 14-year-old Wentworth boy in Major Calvert Street were arrested by police.

According to communications officer of the Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede, members of Wentworth police Vispol team responded to the shooting incident and upon arrival, were informed by the bystanders that the victim had been rushed to Wentworth Hospital in a private vehicle.

“One suspect was immediately arrested after being identified by witnesses on the scene. Later, further information was given to the police of a suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm and who was an accomplice in the shooting. The teenager was arrested after the police found him in possession of an unlicensed .38 revolver and ammunition,” Gumede said.

The 16-year-old was charged for being in unlawful possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, while the 18-year-old was charged with attempted murder.
“Police confiscated the firearm and ammunition. The firearm will be sent to ballistics to establish if it was used in the commission of any other crime. More arrests are imminent,” added Gumede.

Station commander of the Wentworth police station, Colonel Sinayo Mtshali, commended police officers who made the arrest by acting swiftly after the complaint.

“We also thank the witnesses who assisted police with positive information which had led to the arrest of the suspect. We urge the community to work with police in the fight against crime. Residents must be the eyes and ears and report crime.”
