Police empower youth to know their rights and responsibilities

The objective of the programme was to not only empower the youth on their rights, but also inform them that they should be mindful of the rights of fellow minors and community members, and the responsibilities attached these rights afforded to them.

AIMED at empowering the youth about their rights and responsibilities, the Brighton Beach police recently hosted its Youth @ Risk Empowerment Programme at the St Francis Xavier Catholic Parish on The Bluff.

Captain Louise le Roux, the station’s spokesperson and programme facilitator, said while the objective was to empower the youth on their rights, they were also informed that they should be mindful of the rights of fellow minors and community members, and the responsibilities attached these rights afforded to them.

“The youth were cautioned about the use of mobile devices to coerce criminal activities within their communities and the educational environment. They were also given information guides,” she said.

Le Roux said the programme promoted the use of the Childline free helpline number, 116, which can be accessed on any network.

“Through collaborations like these, the police together with its partners in policing, strive towards not just empowering the youth, but to also encourage community participation from them, so that they can become positive role models for younger children and be upstanding citizens within their communities,” she said.
