‘Quins cricket team heads to premier league

The 'Quins first team who emerged the winners in the KZN Cricket Union (KZNCU) Kingsmead Cup, T20 semi-final match at the weekend, won the Promotion league.

IT was a great victory for the Harlequins Cricket Club’s first team who emerged the winners in the KZN Cricket Union (KZNCU) Kingsmead Cup, T20 semi-final match against the Dolphins School of Excellence (DSE) team at the Kingsmead Cricket stadium on April 16.

Ernest Kettle, the club’ senior advisor said, the ‘Quins first team scored 128 runs for 8 wickets.

“Kalvin Venter scored 39 runs, and Devlin Dolan 32 runs. DSE responded with 99 all out. Dolan captured 4 wickets for 9 runs in 4 overs. ‘Quins won by 29 runs.

“The team advanced to the cup final against Hillary Malvern CC that same afternoon. ‘Quins scored 154 for 9 wickets. Devlin Dolan scored 45 runs, Keshav Govender, 24 runs, Mathew Kirkham, 18 runs, Kevin Kettle, 13 runs, and Heath Manicom, 21 runs. Hillary Malvern scored 134 all out. Keshav Govender took 4 wickets for 20, Kevin Kettle took 2 wickets for 20 runs in 4 overs.

“’Quins were victorious in a sensational final match by 20 runs, taking the 16 team trophy ending a commendable season. ‘Quins also won the 16 team Promotion league and will be promoted to the KZNCU Premier league next season,” he said.

Kettle said the club held its annual awards ceremony at the Bluff National Park Golf Club on April 14.

“It was an outstanding event, better than ever before and very well attended.”

Some of the awardees were Kevin Kettle, clubman of the season; Andre Viljoen, league winning coach; and Rahul Batohi, league winning manager. There were also awards given for the best batsman, bowler and player of the season for each of the ‘Quins teams, including the under 13 and 11.
