WATCH: Resident turns dumping hotspot into community garden

Attracting the help of other residents in the area, the garden is often visited by children in the community and boasts several indigenous plants, as well as colourful flowers.

BEING actively involved in keeping his community in a pristine condition has always been one of Mervin Pillay’s favourite pastimes.

Pillay started a clean-up on the corner of Dinapur Road and Beverly Gardens about seven years ago after illegal dumping created an eyesore and posed a health risk to residents living in the close-knit community.

Finding himself back home after a few years of working in another province, Pillay set about to tackle the illegal dumping hotspot once again, and began tending to the garden he created after clearing out the rubbish from the area.

Using plants which he collects and ornaments from his home, Pillay has successfully turned the spot into one that the community can be proud of.

“I am pleased to note that in just a month, we were able to clear the area and beautify it. I thank those who come to assist me without me even having to ask, and welcome anyone to bring along plants or ornaments to make the area more attractive and neat.
“Verges are a reflection of our homes and our community and we should take pride in keeping it clean and presentable.

“Those who witness illegal dumping should report it so that culprits can be caught, fined and taught a lesson,” added Pillay.
Residents in the area said they were pleased that Pillay took it upon himself to adopt the area and Pillay plans to approach eThekwini Municipality, so that he can adopt the spot and maintain the area.
