Montclair detective hailed as man sentence to life for killing colleague

The 37-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder, 10 years for attempted murder, two years for the unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for being in possession of unlicensed ammunition.

A MONTCLAIR police detective, Sergeant Bhekomuzi Gabriel Dlamini, of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, has been hailed for his meticulous investigations, which led to the conviction and sentencing of a 37-year-old man who shot and killed his colleague in 2021.

Sthembiso Dube, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 45-year-old Trevor Shazi, in the Durban High Court recently.

He was further sentenced to 10 years for attempted murder, two years for the unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for being in possession of unlicensed ammunition.

Captain Cheryl Pillay, Montclair police station spokesperson, said Shazi, who was with another colleague at the time, had been driving his company vehicle on-route to a site, when he was shot at on Grimsby Road in Mobeni on July 24, 2021, at about 08:30.

She said Detective Sergeant Dlamini, who was one of the first responders at the crime scene, gathered information which led to the swift arrest of Dube at the man’s place of employment.

Colonel Trevor Small, Montclair police station commander, said he commended Dlamini for the sterling investigations conducted from the initial crime scene.

“The gathering of information and evidence at the scene played a vital role in investigations and prosecution.”
He added that it was important for witnesses to follow through with court cases such as this to ensure that justice is served.
