New whale mural brings sea to shore

The mural is highlighting and creating awareness about marine life.

HOPING to uplift The Bluff area, while highlighting and creating awareness about some of its famed marine life, the Sodurba Tourism Association embarked on an initiative to have a life-size mural painted of a humpback whale, and a calf.

The over 20-metre long work of art, which was done by well-known artist and mural painter, Gifford ‘Giffy’ Duminy, can be seen along a wall situated on the corner of Marine Drive and Herbert Andrews Road.

Helga du Preez, the chairperson of the association said, “The Bluff was awarded international Whale Heritage Site status, and we felt it was time to start branding the suburb. One of the ideas was to have a mural, instead of the normal signage. We want people to take minute to stop and look, instead of driving or walking by.

The mural is also part of our development of the KZN Whale Coast® and in great time for the Welcoming of the Whales Festival™ in June,” she said.

Du Preez, said she was proud and excited about the mural.

“Giffy, who is very talented did an amazing job, completed the mural within two weeks. It is beautiful and we cannot wait for everyone to see it,” she said.

Du Preez said they were hoping to add another calf on the open space of the wall, and were appealing for assistance.

“We are a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), so we have raise our own funds for initiatives. We would appreciate any contributions as we need about R13 000 for the additional calf. We feel it will make this beautiful ‘landmark’ even better,” she said.
