Help Wentworth soccer star showcase talent at Brazil tournament

Davon Claassen said his greatest achievement so far was being recruited to play for the Effingham Rapid FC, recently.

FOR Wentworth soccer enthusiast Davon Claassen, being selected to play in a tournament in Brazil is a once in a lifetime opportunity he does not want to miss out on. But, the 18-year-old now has to raise about R40 000 for various costs including travel, to play in the Brazil Cup, one of the most important youth football tournaments worldwide, set to take place in April.

This year marks the 12th anniversary of the event, which brings together players and teams from 50 different countries. Claassen plays for the Jamarie Sports Academy, and is also a midfielder for Fairvale Secondary School’s soccer team.

He said he was selected to play in the international tournament by Major Sports 365, a Wentworth-based recruitment agency.

“I was selected by coach Randell Buikes after he invited me to the trials. I had to play against his selected team. Soon after he told me that I performed well and would be playing with the team at the tournament. I am very excited and proud of myself.

“However, my only challenge is to now raise the money for the trip which is just a few weeks away. I would be honoured and happy if I am able to go. I have loved playing soccer since I was six-years-old.

“My dad played soccer and I would attend all of his matches. While the match is on, I would be kicking my ball on the sideline, pretending that I was out on the field playing with them,” he said.

Claasen said his role model is Yusuf Maart, a midfielder for Kaizer Chiefs.

“I have always looked up to him because of his techniques when he is on the field, and I hope to play with him one day. My ultimate goal is to pursue soccer professionally in the future,” he said.

Claassen said his greatest achievement so far was being recruited to play for the Effingham Rapid FC, recently.
“It is an amazing feeling. I have just signed a two year contract with the club. I will get the opportunity to play with team in matches across the country,” he said.
