Enforce bylaws to deal with slum conditions

It is the duty of the various municipality departments to uphold the law so that areas don't deteriorate beyond redemption.

EDITOR – Regarding the one-time clean-up of parts of Fynnlands as stated by Eurakha Singh, manager of the SDB ABM, Mr Nick Le Roux's letter to the editor showed up the heart of the problems.

This is exactly what I'm talking about – now what? Are those buildings, the station, and broken-down buildings going to stay like that and the unoccupied land that has been trashed in Bluff Road at Fynnlands station?

How can any department that took part in the clean up at Fynnlands turn a blind eye to the state of these buildings and the people occupying these buildings without proper facilities and the unhealthy state and lack of hygiene. Are we going to wait until we have a typhoid fever outbreak, a serious infectious disease with fever caused by harmful bacteria in food or water?

It's not the duty of any ratepayer to clean up somebody else's mess. We as a community have an obligation and duty to place our garbage in the right bags, and the person that is too lazy to take his garbage or rubble to the correct facilities whcih the municipality has provided, and thinks that this garbage can be dumped anywhere, must face the full might of the law.

It is also our obligation to report any of these transgressions that occur so that we can control the situation before it gets out of control, as we are experiencing at Fynnlands station. It is the duty of the various municipality departments to uphold the law so that areas don't deteriorate beyond redemption.
