Young man killed in drive-by shooting laid to rest

A case of murder and attempted murder is being investigated by police, Mazwi was laid to rest on February 11.

ASPIRING chef, Mazwi Magenu, who was among a group of youngsters shot during a drive-by shooting amid a deadly drug turf war in Wentworth, has been laid to rest.

Twenty-four-year-old Mazwi, and five others, were struck by a hail of bullets on February 1, at about 20:45, when unknown suspects fired shots at the group, at the corner Tuin and Woodville roads.

Mazwi’s aunt, Nobahle Magenu, said after the sounds of gunshots rang through the community, family members who were at Mazwi’s home in Wolraad Road, could hear people screaming out his name, which immediately prompted concern.

“Within seconds, a few people were at our house and notified us that Mazwi had been shot. We are struggling to come to terms with his death. Mazwi had big dreams and he was passionate about his culinary skills. He planned to get a job and create a better future for himself and his family. We are heartbroken to have lost him,” said Nobahle.

Communications officer of the Wentworth police station, Captain Mbuso Gumede, said it is alleged that six people were seated outside a tuck shop when the occupants of an unknown motor vehicle fired several shots towards them and sped off.

“All victims were rushed to Wentworth Hospital by private vehicles, but one of them died on arrival. The other victims sustained gunshot wounds to different parts of their body. Four victims are in a stable condition, while one victim remains in a critical condition,” Gumede added.

In a separate shooting incident, police were notified of a body lying along Lansdowne Road on February 2, at about 06:05.

“Upon arrival, police found a man, presumably about 30-years-old, dead on the scene. A number of spent cartridges were confiscated by the officers on scene. A case of a murder is under investigation,” added Gumede.
