Confessions of a single mamma

SINGLE-HANDEDLY playing mother bear to my two cubs has been a journey filled with joy, tears, heartache and an abundance of love that transcends to an unexplainable bond.

My tribe is made up of me, as the yin and yang who is also required to be superhuman sometimes, a 14-year-old talented musician who is way beyond his years, and a smart, sarcastic 11-year-old who thrives on dark humour.

Our mascot is Jewel, a Pekingese, who I bought as a method of distraction soon after I was divorced.

Being the mom of two boys, born three years apart, has been one heck of a ride. Every time I see a single mom or dad, I am in awe because I know the amount of love, strength, courage, patience, and time it takes to get it all done alone. There is nobody coming to rescue you. And when you have brought life into this world, you do what it takes to provide for them and keep them safe.

My journey, as twisted as the plot has become, has made me realise both my strengths and my weaknesses, and has been a whirlwind of an adventure.

I am thankful that I am blessed with the grace of the universe and I tackle every trial and triumph with the same faith…that everything is just how it’s meant to be, and that what is meant for me, will never miss me.

Just like the mind-blowing journey of going from childhood to being an adult, the journey from ‘adulting’ to parenting will blow your mind away…and sometimes your sanity too.

In this column, I will share experiences which left me spewing cuss words and wondering if this was all a dream, hoping I would wake up and it will all be over, as well as moments which I will forever cherish as a mom.

While aiming to create a platform that single moms and dads can relate with, I invite readers to share their most challenging and memorable moments. As for me, I am winging it all the way!

Columns will include a range of topics, from narcissism effects and healing from a narcissistic partner, types of abuse, finances after divorce, dealing with brokenness and masking, acceptance and self love, learning to live with only one parent around, needing mum or dad, being abandoned, narcissistic parents, to dealing with outbursts from parents, dealing with excuses and coping mechanisms.
