Man sentenced to 20 years behind bars for armed robbery

The complainant had been waiting outside his colleagues home when he was accosted by the armed men during the early hours of July 23, 2020.

A MONTCLAIR police detective, Sergeant Bhekomuzi Gabriel Dlamini, of the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit has been hailed for his sterling investigations, which lead to the conviction and sentencing of three men who committed an armed robbery in the area in 2020.

Sanele Ngwabe, 33, was recently sentenced to twenty years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm in the Durban Regional Court.

His co-accused, Lungani Brian Ndlovu, 30, and Junior Andrew Combo, 22, were both sentenced to three years imprisonment for being in possession of stolen property.

Captain Cheryl Pillay, the Montclair police spokesperson, said the complainant had been waiting outside his colleagues home when he was accosted by the armed men during the early hours of July 23, 2020.

“According the complainant, a chemical was sprayed on his eyes which caused him to become disorientated. The men took his personal belongings and forcefully removed him from the vehicle, before fleeing with it,” she said.

Pillay said Sergeant Dlamini had a breakthrough in the case which resulted in the men being arrested on the same day. She said he successfully opposed bail citing that three men were flight risks.

Colonel Trevor Small, the Montclair police station commander, commended Sergeant Dlamini for the swift arrests and for the manner in which he investigated the case.

“His meticulous investigation has ensured that hardened criminals are brought to justice.”
Small said as we approach the festive season, police are appealing to residents to be cautious and alert at all times.
“Criminals will be scouting areas where they can commit crimes on unsuspecting victims.”
