Wentworth mother left devastated after son allegedly sets home on fire

The woman is appealing for assistance to rebuild.

A WENTWORTH mother who lost all of her belongings after her son allegedly set her home alight recently,  is hoping to get assistance from authorities and the community to rebuild.

While police search for the man, who fled shortly after he set the couch in his mother’s home alight, community leader, Tracey Williams, is assisting the mother pick up the pieces after the incident.

She said the incident shined a spotlight on the severity of the drug problem plaguing the community of Wentworth.

“Our community is riddled with drug addiction, social ills and an increasing crime rate. The fire, which ripped through the home after the man intimidated his mom, exposes what many parents face at the hands of their addicted children.

“The mom thought she put the fire out and ran after him to reprimand him. On return, she found her flat in flames. Neighbours rushed to her assistance and managed to douse the flames.

“Although there was a lot of damage to her property, we are thankful that the mom was not injured. Wentworth needs urgent intervention and the leaders are failing us. We need better leadership so that these social ills and criminal elements can be eradicated from our community. This is the fate of not only this mom, but many others in this community and intervention is crucial,” Williams said.
