Police team up to empower youth

The initiative was aimed at addressing social ills that hamper the health and prosperity of youth on a daily basis, especially drug use and dependency.

PLAYING their part in assisting to change the community they serve, Brighton Beach police teamed up with various role players to educate youth.

In commemoration of International Youth Day, celebrated on August 12, the initiative served to empower the youth between 15 and 24 years of age.

Dealing with the major issues concerning the youth so that world leaders are able to solve and work for the betterment and prosperity of the youth. eTthekwini Metro K9 Specialised Unit and Professional Risk and Security Solutions (PRSS), helped Brighton Beach police create vigilance at the Pine Road bridge in Clairwood.

Brighton Beach police’s communications officer, Captain Louise le Roux, said the initiative was aimed at addressing social ills that hamper the health and prosperity of youth on a daily basis, especially drug use and dependency.
At 06:00, members of the joint campaign handed 1 500 Drugs Drag You Down brochures, which were distributed to parents, guardians, caregivers and the youth.

“Most of those who received the brochures were pedestrians and commuters. The brochure explained what drugs are, categories of drugs, possible indicators or drug use or dependency, and provided general pointers one can be on the lookout for in youth who are using drugs. Steps to be taken to limit drug dependency was given out. The brochure also explained what cannabis is and its various forms. The effects of using cannabis and the health implications using it was also provided. The strategic objectives of the SAPS was achieved through hosting the initiative, which added educational value and focused on youth,” Le Roux said.
