3 things you can do to stop illegal dumping

Those caught illegally dumping will be fined R5 000.

ALTHOUGH DSW changed the number of loads allowed to be disposed at a garden refuse site from one per day to one per week, councillor Gavin Hegter, says it should not excuse the disgusting act of illegal dumping.

“The problem has been exacerbated by the closure of some of the land fill sites and by the restrictions imposed by the municipality. There are a few steps that one can take to assist in keeping their neighbourhood clean. This will save the department money that could be channelled to address other service delivery challenges,” says Hegter.

3 things you can do to stop illegal dumping
1. If you have a contractor working for you, ensure that they are disposing of any waste correctly.
2. Monitor isolated areas. All community members need to view this just like any other crime in our communities.
3. Be prepared to take a stand. If you witness the crime of illegal dumping, report it to 031 468 3287. If you are prepared to give an affidavit detailing the description of the vehicle and registration number, the offender will be fined R5 000.
