WATCH: Durban North resident transforms his verge for municipal competition

A LOCAL resident’s verge transformation has been turning heads in the Durban North community.
Five weeks ago, Rob Hibbert, his wife Tanya and gardener Austin Carrot started a project to beautify their verge for the eThekwini Municipality’s Verge Competition.
Hosted by the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit, the competition aims to promote a sustainable environment by encouraging residents to beautify and keep their verges well maintained.
Hibbert said he was inspired by local environmental group, Enviro Fixers Durban North, to plant indigenous, and the results are evident for all to see.
“We’ve never entered before, and we thought, why not try this year? My wife and I have always enjoyed gardening, and we really wanted to showcase indigenous, water-wise plants and show how a space can be transformed. Prior to the makeover, our verge was mainly grass which required constant de-weeding.
“We decided to remove the grass, put in sleepers and mulch and form a pathway through what we feel is a little bit of an oasis on our road. Planting indigenous is a great way to attract birds, insects and bees, and we hope our efforts to beautify the verge will inspire other residents,” he said.
