Merewent Cheshire Home thanks community heroes

The Merewent Cheshire Home extends its heartfelt gratitude to the community for ensuring it continues its good work by keeping it safe over a period that rattled many.

THE Merewent Cheshire Home extends its heartfelt gratitude to the community for ensuring it continues its good work by keeping it safe over a period that rattled many.

The unrest which rocked the province recently had an emotional and psychological impact on the residents and staff.

“We would hear gunshots from nearby which was quite frightening. We were also short staffed throughout that week as some staff were not able to get to work since they were locked out of the area and those who had been working the night shift on Sunday were locked in and couldn’t go home. This forced them to work double shifts until it was safe to go home. Through the community’s support and the courage of committed patrollers, who braved potential threats as well as the cold, to ensure our safety, we were able to survive that. Volunteers assisted us with provisions of food to sustain our food supply. We appreciate the support from the public. We are also humbled to have a dedicated board of management that goes out of its way to source donations for our home. A big shout out to Raven Naidoo and Quinton Manto for their tireless efforts during the unrest as they made contacts with donors and collected donations on behalf of Merewent Cheshire Home,” said the organisation’s manager, Winnie Mkhize.

Mkhize said the past few months have been a learning experience and it was from her supervisor where she drew most of her inspiration, strength and understanding.

A hopeful Mkhize shared that there are plans to host a Women’s Day programme on Friday, August 6. She appeals for toiletry donations and a lunch for the residents and staff. Other much-needed items include meat, bread, mielie meal, rice, milk, cooking oil and other non-perishable foods which will go a long way in feeding the 35 residents in the organisation’s care.

Donations can be made to Standard Bank, account name: Merewent Cheshire Home, account number: 051745542, branch: Bluff, branch code: 043326
