DSW delays: residents urged to practice patience

DSW staff have experienced challenges in collecting refuse on the normal collection days, resulting in several delays.

THE Durban Solid Waste (DSW) Collingwood Depot will remain closed until Monday, 8 of June.

The depot was closed by the city as a result of several positive Covid-19 cases. Surrounding depots have since been assisting with normal refuse collection within the Bluff area.

“Some challenges have been experienced by DSW staff in collecting refuse on the normal collection days, resulting in several delays. Refuse bags have also been torn and refuse scattered within parks, roads and public spaces as a consequence of these delays. Normal street sweeping and litter picking services have also been placed on hold until 8 June. This has affected the emptying of various DSW bins across the ward,” explained ward 66 councillor, JP Prinsloo who has been inundated with complaints from community members.

He added that Tara and Bluff roads are serviced by an external contractor (public realm contractor) and will not be affected by the stoppage. “DSW management has reiterated that refuse will be collected on normal refuse collection days after 12:30pm. Please leave your bags on the verge until the next morning. This is not and ideal situation but in an effort to keep our community clean residents can assist by picking up refuse in their streets and around their properties. Especially if bags have been torn. With this ‘new normal’ we will have to adapt and come together as a community to deal with similar service delivery challenges caused by the virus and the lockdown in the future,” said Prinsloo.

If the refuse in your road has not been collected contact DSW on 031-311-8804 or send an email to dsw@durban.gov.za.
