Ward 68 karate chops to district games

The tournament basically went down as a head to head match against the wards which competed for the first time ever.

AS part of the 2019 eThekwini Municipality Ward Games, wards 66 and 68 took each other on in semi-contact karate on Sunday at Austerville Community Hall to secure a spot at the district games.

Karateka Megan McIntosh shows great potential during the individual karate techniques round.

There are only two wards within district seven that participate and compete in semi-contact karate. “The tournament basically went down as a head to head match against the wards which competed for the first time ever. Ward 68 came out tops with most individual winners from the different rounds and will move on to the next round,” explained Carl Webster, the facilitator of the tournament.

Karateka Nicarla Victor gave it her all at the tournament and won first place in the individual karate techniques round.

The young karatekas competed in two sets of individual rounds in which they executed effective martial arts techniques that called for points accreditation, as well as semi-contact rounds where two karatekas competed against one another under the watchful eyes of three referees who scored points in accordance to techniques used.

Sithembakuye Madlalose fends off an attack from karateka Abigail Shultz during the semi-contact rounds.
