Wentworth youth showcase sports skills

The fun sports day comprised of multiple codes of sports including soccer, netball and basketball for boys and girls in U7 to U17 age groups.

THE Wentworth Sports Confederation held its fifth annual Youth Sports Tournament at the Ogle Road Grounds on Saturday, 15 June.

With Youth Day as an overarching theme for the event, the initiative was aimed at bringing the children and youth of Wentworth together for a positive opportunity to play in a safe environment and develop their sports skills. The fun sports day comprised of multiple codes of sports including soccer, netball and basketball for boys and girls in U7 to U17 age groups.

South Durban Basin Area Based Management (SDB ABM), as well as other local businesses, helped sponsor the event. Chairman of the Wentworth Sports Confederation said: “For about five years, the children in our community were not able to engage in sport because they didn’t have a structured sports facility. Hence the confederation has come on board to address this and provide structured sports development for promising youth and local sports clubs. These are our future Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana stars and we just want to give our youth a time to shine and have fun in the process. Sports can be a means of livelihood, a way out of negative circumstances as well as a vehicle for change in a disadvantaged community.”
