Help Wentworth author jet off to Texas

Born of bi-racial parentage, Clare is a personified sweet mixture of dark treacle and white sugar, as well as a lover of the arts at heart.

FROM an idyllic and remote sugar plantation in Mthubathuba, north of KZN during the 1940s, who knew that an internationally recognised author from Wentworth would be born. As a young girl Clare King used to spend hours out in the open field fantasising about being a famous actor or dancer.

She got to fulfil her dreams by participating in several dance and singing competitions and even featured in two local movies as an extra. “I was a very curious farm girl growing up. Throughout school, I acted and sang in every play or concert that I could participate in. One competition that stands out for me the most, was the Hyperama dance contest held in the 1980s. The girls I was in a dance group in decided to vote me out the group because I was struggling to get some of the steps at the time. So I bravely decided to enter on my own and perform the ‘Thriller’ song and dance piece by Michael Jackson. To mine as well as their surprise, I won a larger prize than them. I feel most alive when I’m on stage and the cheers from the audience bring me so much joy,” she said.

Born of bi-racial parentage, Clare is a personified sweet mixture of dark treackle and white sugar, as well as a lover of the arts at heart. She was inspired to write her published biography titled ‘Brown Sugar’ in 2016, which has now been included in the Texas Book Festival as well as the Frankfurt Book Festival and she has been invited to go to Texas to speak about her book, the inspiration behind it as well as do book signings. Ward 68 councillor Aubrey Snyman, Patrica Dove from Wentworth Organisation for Women in collaboration with Austerville Library, are trying to raise funds for Clare to go to Texas. The team is currently in the planning stages of their fundraising efforts and also appeal to the public to assist with sponsorships for her travel and accommodation fees as well as buy her book which promises a great read full of insight about the colourful life and times of Clare King.

Brown Sugar is available on the Amazon website or you can call Clare King for more information on 076-968-5711.
