Roll on down for roller derby open skate night

Join the Durban Roller Derby women on Tuesday, 29 January

ON Tuesday, 15 January KZN’s only roller derby league, the Durban Roller Derby hosted its first new skater open skate night where men and women living in Durban and surrounds could join the women for a night of skating before the first 2019 Freshies Programme kicks off.

Eighteen men and women from around KZN joined the Durban Roller Derby squad at the Portuguese Hall in Carrington Heights, where they received a crash course in roller derby.

Roller derby is one of the most inclusive sports currently available in the country and caters to both men and women of all fitness levels and ages. Men and women who are interested in trying it out can join the Durban Roller Derby women on Tuesday, 29 January for open skates, where they will be kitted out in skates and protective gear and guided through the basics of not falling before the main programme starts.

The Freshies programme will kick off on Tuesday, 5 February. This eight-week programme will see new skaters learn the art of sticky skating, jumping, weaving, crossovers as well as taking and giving a hip or shoulder check. There is an once-off fee of R600 which includes track time and gear hire for the eight weeks.

Anyone interested can join on Tuesdays at 6.15pm, email Durban Roller Derby at durbanrollerderby@gmail.com or visit the Facebook page: DurbanRollerDerby
