“We assisted the community in various areas with porridge, groceries, prayer and counseling. Now that we are operating as a church we are able to reach out to more people in the community,” said pastor Kerry Ann Hughes.
Growing up in Austerville, Hughes saw the poverty and the suffering children firsthand and she wanted to assist, so she started outreach efforts to feed the poor and preach the gospel. At the outreaches, they have an opportunity to speak to the residents and the children and have heard about terrible stories of abuse and unemployment.

“Due to the huge unemployment problem in Austerville, we decided to give 63 children a party. Most of their parents are unemployed so we decided to give each child a pair of school shoes, stationery and a party pack full of goodies. The children had a wonderful meal and dessert and were excited to have the basic essentials for school,” she added.
They also gave grocery hampers to the the families in the church and redistributed clothes and shoes which had been collected throughout the year. “We are a small church but are dedicated to assisting our community to alleviate hunger. We believe every child has a future and every child deserves the basic right to a daily meal and the basic necessities for school.

When the MATTCH Foundation heard about the plight of the children in Austerville, it came on board to assist with the school shoes and stationery. The foundation also provided goodies on the day and together with the church’s efforts, the children enjoyed a wonderful party.
