CROW calendar marks 10th year
Over R2million has been raised through the calender campaign
THE decade celebration of the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife’s (CROW) calendar campaign took place last week, as the Yellowwood Park animal rehab facility looked back on the R2-million which has been raised in support of animal welfare organisations.
At an event that doubled as the launch of next year’s calendar campaign and tour held at CROW’s Coedmore Avenue premises on Thursday, 11 October, a presentation was given by Compass Cares and CROW members on the calendar’s benefits.

Compass Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of Compass Medical Waste Services, has produced the wildlife calendar for the past 10 years, raising over R2-million for animal welfare in the process. Of this, R1.3-m was given to CROW. The wildlife facility put the funds to good use by purchasing three vehicles which have travelled over 300,000kms to conduct 1,000 rescues and releases, more than 200 talks in rural schools and seen the development of geese enclosures which allowed CROW to house and treat 800 Egyptian geese in the last baby season from last September to March 2018. The donated funds also allowed CROW to invest in a new operating room, clinic and an antelope enclosure which has assisted in housing more baby antelope to keep up with incoming rescues, which is on the rise.

Since Compass Cares funded the education officer for a year she has established her position which pays her salary while still allowing her to focus on pro bono tours in rural areas. “To date over 200,000 children in KZN have received our wildlife warriors education talk. Compass Cares funded the new Chacma baboon enclosure fencing which meets international standards and has allowed us to begin our second off-site enclosure,” said Sharon de Beer from Compass Cares.
Director of CROW Paul Hoyte thanked Compass Cares for its help and support. “CROW has been running for 38 years and it wouldn’t be possible without relationships like Compass Cares. They have assisted with thousands of rescues, thanks to the vehicles they have provided us. The new clinic upgrade moves us forward to a registered clinic. The new upgrade will enable us to have a fully fledged clinic and full staff, including a vet and trainee vets,” said Hoyte.
