Motorist arrested for clocking 203 km/h in Alberton

A 27-year-old motorist was caught driving 203 km/h in a Mercedes on the N3 in Alberton at 7:45 am on Saturday.

Between April 2 and April 3 in Alberton, Boksburg and Germiston, EMPD officers issued traffic fines to lawbreakers, impounded a vehicle after the driver ran away and arrested intoxicated male and female drivers, including one for excessive speeding.

The officers involved were from Alberton, Boksburg, Germiston North and South, Overload Control, Speed Enforcement and the Social Crime Prevention Unit.

According to EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng, officers staged roving roadblocks in Boksburg, Germison and Wadeville between 6pm on Friday and 2am on Saturday, targeting Osborn, Lamp, Lambert, President, Main, Trichardts, North Rand and Main Reef roads.

“Thirty males and two females, aged between 29 and 50, were breathalysed and found to be over the alcohol limit and arrested and taken to the Boksburg, Elsburg and Germiston police stations. They were charged with driving under the influence,” said Mokheseng.

“Two taverns, in Dawn Park and Elsburg, found to still be operating after 11pm, were instructed to lock the gates. In addition, 38 traffic fines for defects, documentations, use of cellphones while driving, safety belts, missing registration/number plates and expired licence discs were issued to transgressors.

“At 10pm, a blue Mercedes Benz sedan which failed to stop at the roadblock in Osborn Road when instructed to do so was cornered in Buhle Park Phase Two.

“The male driver stopped the vehicle in the middle of a road, got out and ran. The vehicle was impounded and taken to the EMPD Alberton yard for safekeeping. It is not clear why the driver ran and EMPD officers are investigating.”

Furthermore, at 7:45am on Saturday, in the Alberton area, the EMPD Speed Enforcement Unit, monitoring the N3 freeway direction south at Grey Avenue (which is zoned 120km/h) stopped a silver/grey Mercedes Benz sedan, driven by a 27-year-old male, for clocking 203km/h without a sound reason. The speedster was arrested and taken to the Alberton Police Station where he was charged with reckless and negligent driving.

From 7am to 3pm, officers from the Eastern Region’s Social Crime Prevention Unit conducted an Easter crime awareness drive at shopping malls, taxi ranks, parks and lakes in Benoni, Springs and Kwa-Thema.

They handed out pamphlets about domestic violence and conducted a small workshop explaining the contents.

“The 33 detained suspects are expected to appear in the Boksburg, Palmridge and Germiston Magistrate’s courts soon. These are ongoing operations and all Covid-19 protocols are observed during these operations,” Mokheseng concluded.
