Melville Koppies launches new 5km hiking trail

Get out of your home and into nature and explore Melville Koppies.

Come and challenge yourself on Melville Koppies’ newly launched 5km hiking trail which cleverly guides you along almost all the existing paths.

The route clambers up rocky gullies, down gentle slopes, through cool forested areas and into open grasslands where some of the grass is chest-high. Take a breather at the various view sites and see if you can spot the Magaliesberg, the cooling towers of Kelvin power station, the Northcliff water tower, and the Leonardo in Sandton, the tallest building in Africa.

And you don’t have to torture yourself. If you tire along the way, there are numerous spots where you can escape from the trail and take a shorter route home.

Come back another Sunday and test yourself again.

Or you can choose to just explore quietly at your own pace. You can also take a guided tour in your group at no extra cost.

Melville Koppies is open every Sunday (except May 2 when it will be open on May 1 instead) from 8am to 11.30am.

There is no need to pre-book and cost is R80 for adults and R40 for children. All income is used for maintenance and security of the Koppies.

There is secure parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia.

Mid-week tours can be arranged. Contact wendavid@mweb.co.za or check out www.mk.org.za for more detailed information about the history and what you can see.

Or you can take it easy and take a slow walk exploring some of the paths like this father and son enjoyed.
