Bus driver killed in accident on N3 Germiston

Bus driver killed in a crash involving a truck on the N3 highway south bound in Germiston.

A bus driver was instantly killed in a crash involving what is alleged to have been a stationary truck on the N3 highway south bound before the N17 highway split in Germiston on January 24, at around 9.30pm.

“As per information on scene, the only driver in the bus who was still to load passengers in Germiston City Centre heading to Marble Hall in Limpopo, was declared dead by paramedics after suffering poly trauma from a crash with a truck that loaded a huge container. Apparently, the bus came from behind and the driver didn’t notice that the truck was stationary, as a result he crashed onto the rear of a truck and was killed instantly,” said William Ntladi, district manager and media liaison from Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

A rescue team from Germiston central fire station had to free the motionless driver from the bus as he was trapped. The team had to use Jaws of Life to recover him from the wreckage; however, the truck driver escaped unharmed.

Four lanes of the highway were affected and had to be closed for the duration of the operation, leaving only one for traffic flow.

The scene was handed over to City of Ekurhuleni traffic officers who conducted investigations.
