Catch Siyanda Maphumulo’s one-man show, Single Partner

He promises to fill the Big Top Arena with laughter and become the first comedian from KwaZulu-Natal to ever do it.

COMEDIAN Siyanda ‘Gonzo’ Maphumulo will be performing his two-hour one-man show, Single Partner, at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena on August 24 at 8pm.

Siyanda’s overnight fame happened when he took his life as a bachelor to TV, asking the reality TV show Date My Family to help him look for a life partner, as he is tired of being single. He said: “Sengikhathele ukuba single ngedwa, ngifuna umuntu esizoba muntu munye naye”, loosely translated as “I want someone I can spend my life with so that we can be single together”.

Unfortunately, the reality show couldn’t find a matching partner, so Siyanda decided to take his predicament to the stage and name his show Single Partner, and yes, he is definitely planning to open up and tell the audience why he didn’t choose any of the ladies who were shortlisted for him.

Hailing from Mandeni in KwaZulu-Natal, the creative, outrageous comedian claims he started comedy because of friends encouraging him to take his storytelling earnestly and start making money. At that time, he knew no comedian who was actually making a living out of comedy, so Siyanda never even imagined himself on stage with hundreds of people watching him. In 2009, during his tertiary education, he entered a competition and auditions were done just outside the library. He won as the funniest raw talent, simply because he was the only contestant on the entire campus, no other comedian wannabees pitched for the competition.

The Zulu comedian’s selling line is Iyenzeka Leyonto (“these things happen”) #iyenzekalento after his appearance on Idols, where he was nominated as a Wooden Mic contestant, claiming famous artist Professor stole his song. The Idols judges were shocked to hear that and he said: “Iyenzeka Leyonto”, meaning as much as it sounds impossible that someone stole his song in his mind, these things do happen.

Gonzo has also released a music single, titled Hheshe Mbhemi, which is available across all digital platforms. He promises to perform the song live for the first time to the fortunate 3 000 fans who would be attending his show.

Doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 8pm. Tickets are priced between R150 and R250 and can be bought through Computicket. He promises to fill the Big Top Arena with laughter and become the first comedian from KwaZulu-Natal to ever do it.
