Lower Sabie Rest Camp: A diamond amongst luxury gems

For many local South Africans, holidays are often based around affordability and it is for this reason that the Lower Sabie Rest Camp can be deemed a rare diamond.

Lower Sabie Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park nestles on the banks of the perennial Sabie River, which draws a wide variety of animals all year round.

It is because of its prime game viewing position that luxury lodges such as Jock Safari Lodge and Camp Shawu have taken up residence close by. But for many local South Africans, holidays are often based around affordability and it is for this reason that the Lower Sabie Rest Camp can be deemed a rare diamond.

The area in which these camps share viewing rights has several waterholes which offer incredible photographic opportunities and good game spotting. Lion prides particularly love to hang around Duke’s waterhole and there have been a number of cheetah and wild dog sightings there as well. At Nhlambanyathi, a bird hide offers one the opportunity to stretch those legs and do some sensational bird watching.

Heading north from Lower Sabie Rest Camp to Tshokwane, you pass over the Sabie River and head through open grasslands and savannahs. It is a favorite grazing spot for large herds of antelope, zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo. With the large number of grazers about, predator activity is higher, with a greater opportunity of seeing lions. This region also has the highest concentration of Giraffe in the Kruger.

The Lower Sabie Road follows the Sabie River and leads to Skukuza, passing through a gorgeous riverine forest. It is the ideal environment for elusive leopards and chances of seeing these beautiful creatures are higher than average.

The area around Mlondozi Dam is a great place to see Marabou Stork, yellow billed storks, hippo and elephant. The circular road around Muntshe Hill often sees cheetah, kudu, and wildebeest.

Although a self-catering camp, Lower Sabie Rest Camp offers incredible facilities, a variety of accommodation options to choose from, and some of the best game viewing to be had in the Kruger.

Visitors can choose to go camping or stay in one of the huts, safari tents, bungalows or guesthouses. Activities offered at the camp include guided game drives, bush walks, visits to Sunset Dam and the bird hide, and outdoor dining experiences.

A safari in the Kruger is about experiencing the bushveld and capturing moments that you won’t easily forget.
