The acclaimed opera Carmen takes to the stage at the Joburg Theatre in June.
Carmen tells the story of a soldier, Don José, falling for the whiles of a gypsy woman named Carmen. So enamoured is he with this woman that he leaves both his military service and his village and attempts to woo her. He, however, loses Carmen’s love to the flamboyant matador Escamillo.
The opera seamlessly blends passion, seduction, jealousy, betrayal and even a little law-breaking. All this is set to one of the most famous scores ever composed.
Carmen is directed by well-known baritone Danie Verster and will be fully staged. It will feature the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra and the Armonia Theatre Chorus, under the baton of Schalk van der Merwe, one of South Africa’s ambitious, upcoming conductors.
Carmen features a local and international cast with seasoned and young and upcoming opera singers. Mezzo-soprano Linette van der Merwe stars as the strong-willed and seductive gypsy who destroys the naïve, lovesick soldier Don José. José is played by Stéfan Louw, well-known tenor on opera stages in South Africa and abroad.
The opera will be sung in French with English subtitles.
Performances of Carmen will be on The Mandela Stage at Joburg Theatre on June 3 at 3pm, June 5 at 7.30pm, June 8 at 7.30pm and June 10 at 3pm.
Ticket prices range from R200 to R475.
